Embarcadero Publishing Company Employment Opportunities

Arts & Entertainment Intern

The Palo Alto Weekly, an award-winning twice-weekly community newspaper (circulation 47,000), is seeking an intern for the Friday arts and entertainment section. The art scene on the Midpeninsula is rich and vibrant, and the Weekly's A&E section regularly covers the events and people in theater, visual arts, music, dance, film and dining. Interns regularly write published articles, with opportunities to do everything from profiling local jazz musicians to attending art openings. They receive guidance in reporting and writing arts features with creativity, accuracy and sound news judgment.

Interns should have a love of the arts and a curiosity about the many facets of the art world. They should be reliable and responsible, ready to work independently and imaginatively to make a story sing. It's preferable to have some journalism experience or course work, and interns must be able to write stories on deadline. Personal experience in the arts is also a plus.

Interns are paid per story and work about 20 hours a week. About two-thirds of an intern's time is spent reporting and writing, and one-third working on other duties. Internships last 13 weeks. Candidates should send a resume and several clips, as well as a cover letter explaining your interest and experience in journalism.
